Helping Adapt Resources for Mental Health Outcomes in Nurturing Youth (HARMONY)

What is the goal of this study?

Not all mental health treatments work the same for every family. This study is helping create new tools so therapists can tailor care to better match each youth’s background, values, and experiences, particularly for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander youth and families.

What will the study involve?

Therapists, parents, and teens will take part in two small group meetings where they will be asked to share their ideas about how to design tools that help therapists personalize treatment for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander youth and families. These group meetings will be video recorded so that the research team captures everyone’s ideas - and these recordings will not be shared with anyone outside of the research team. Participants will also complete a brief questionnaire about their demographics.

Where is the study taking place?

Totally remotely! All group meetings will be held online via Zoom.

How long will the study take?

Each group meeting will last 90 minutes. Scheduling will be based on the group’s availability.

Who can participate?

We are hoping to learn from:

  • Therapists with at least 5 years of clinical experience using working with Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander families with anxiety, depression, trauma, conduct, or substance use problems

  • Parents of a Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander child (ages 5-15) who has received therapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, conduct, or substance use problems in the past year

  • Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander teens (ages 12-15) who have received therapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, conduct, or substance use problems in the past year

What are the risks and benefits of participating?

The risks of participating are minimal and include mild boredom and others in the group knowing that you participated. There are no anticipated direct benefits, but your participation may help the research team develop tools for helping improve mental health treatment for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander youth and families.

Will I be paid for participating?

Yes! Therapists may be paid up to a total of $300 ($150 per 90-minute group meeting). Parents may be paid up to $240 ($120 per 90-minute group meeting). Teens may be paid up to a total of $120 ($60 per 90-minute group meeting).
